Infinite Love

Getting in touch with the power that drives the Universe...

Many years ago I was in a men's Bible study group at a former church.  I remember one topic that came up for discussion was about God's involvement with His universe.  Most of us were aware of the school of thought that proposes that God is like some cosmic watchmaker who created the universe and then set it in motion, only to remove His influence over it.  Some of us liked this interpretation, as we felt incapable of explaining the events transpiring in the world.

Others felt that God was intimately involved on a moment-by-moment basis and that nothing escaped his attention and care.  I was reminded of this discussion lately when I read John Ortberg's book, Love Beyond Reason.  I am amazed at how simply he writes, but with such profound clarity.  One of my favorite passages from the book reads:

"Every time you wake up, think a thought, enjoy a meal, these are not random occurrences.  They are

Post-It notes of love that the Father attaches to all creation, in the hopes that someone will read them."

It's a nice way of looking at our universe; so personal, so caring, so involved and engaging.  And it reminds me of what G.K. Chesterton said about God's sterwardship of our world.  "It is possible that God says every morning, 'Do it again' to the sun; and every evening, 'Do it again' to the moon.  It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them.  It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we."

Wow!  These two authors really gave me an overwhelming sense of God's personal involvement in the intricracies and details of this world.  If He cares that much about the opening of every flower, how much more must He love and care for me, His beloved!
